one of the most frequently asked questions is how to get a great picture with your smartphone when I'm in a restaurant shooting pictures for The restaurant Project a lot of times it's dark and I have no choice but to use the flash So what I try to do is challenge myself and try to get the best picture with the best light with your iPhone I found the key to getting a nice photo with your iPhone is finding great light So try to find natural daylight near a window that's indirect which means there's not hard sun coming right on your subject The great thing about having a smartphone now is you can really take a picture anywhere anytime but to really get a good exposure you need great light try to avoid finding incandescent light which is overhead light from your house or a lamp this causes a yellowish tone For demonstration purposes we're using a store-bought salad The disadvantage of using a smartphone is everything stays in focus so there's no depth of field So what I try to do to combat that is to let the background blow out which means just let it go really bright and keep it airy I also like to use some props sometimes Just use a few simple props because again everything stays in focus so you don't want too much depth of field even though the light is soft we do still have a directional light coming through and it's coming from the upper right so what we wanna do is fill with a white card from the lower left In this case I'm just using a napkin and it'll fill some of your shadow areas so it doesn't feel so constrast-y So you can see what it's doing when you bring it up to the shot Now on the iphone it has a touch focus and what that allows you to do is find focus and exposure So what I'mma do is just keep touching around the image in some of the shadow areas to try to get the best exposure again it's with the focus feature Try to find the exposure that gives this background just starts to blow it out which means makes it a little lighter Gives it a little bit airier look to it The key to any great food photo is keeping it simple lighting and simple propping
