On the front end we see all the materials that we find in traditionally the the urban environment of New york so we see steel we see wood we see subway tiles it’s actually a metaphysical a metaphorical journey from the subway out and into the middle part of the space America has some unusual homes for sale right now from cave dwellings to old nuclear missile sites for the more artfully inclined though this two million dollar Manhattan penthouse apartment features repurposed materials that you won’t find anywhere else Architect adam Kushner took nearly three and a half years to construct it installing subway car doors turning s a discarded walk into a fireplace even building a moveable bedroom floor made out of deli counter cutting boards his design muse natures four elements earth fire air and water Let’s start off for example with water because it’s the first thing we see as we step in So we have this all the facets of water in all of its forms and all of its uses So we have water for for bathing so we have this in-ground Jacuzzi tub which greets you right at the front and of course the question always becomes well what do your neighbors think of it because I’m I’m actually sort of in their space and alright we can talk about that a little later The last element which is sort of the most interesting one is air And basically everything you see about our heads has been dropped on top of this building we opened up the building itself we keep the roof exposed Just like a cloud it’s meant to be very ephemeral nothing touches each other you’ll see that there are pieces of window that separate floors from ceilings ceilings from walls This is actually retractable roof so that opens up completely to the sky and not just to have a metaphorical cloud but we can have a cloud in our space and we actually do do that on occasion and now is this a closet as well or is it just are the doors just strictly for show Nope these are our these are our walk-in closets so we they are well used So I have to ask where do you get something like a like a former subway door Well that is a good question I had this idea that I wanted to buy a subway car so I I spent a lot of time speaking to people and finally I got someone at the New york City Transit Authority at the depot at 215th street He was an intern he was a summer intern he said why don’t you come up I’ll see what I have I said I just want to buy a subway door He goes you know what take three of them threw in the gloves I threw in those old strap hangers as well and I think I got the whole the whole shebang for two hundred dollars Why sell now Because I have two kids and a nanny living in a space that was designed for a bachelor pad with a wife so that’s the real reason we’ve just ran out of space because I would live here the rest of my days if I could
